Aanya Kapoor opens the door of her second-floor atelier in Bandra West with flour on her cheek and a half-stitched lehenga draped over one shoulder.
This is Sona & Soil — a label Aanya founded four years ago with one sewing machine, her grandmother's notebook of block-print recipes, and a single, almost embarrassing rule: no piece leaves the studio unless one of them would wear it to their own sister's wedding.
I don't want to dress a thousand women badly. I want to dress a hundred women so well that their daughters fight over the saree thirty years later.
"Every time I said no," she says, sliding the kettle off the flame, "the brand got slower, and somehow, also more honest."
"We're not in a hurry," Aanya says. "Beautiful things never were."
